Soy Wax vs Paraffin: What's the Difference?

If you've ever shopped for candles, you've probably noticed that some are labelled "soy wax" while others don't mention the wax type at all. But does it actually matter? The short answer is yes — quite a lot. Here's a straightforward guide to the differences between soy wax and paraffin wax, and why we choose soy for every Mellow Moments candle.

What Is Paraffin Wax?

Paraffin wax is a by-product of petroleum refining — it's derived from crude oil. It's been the most widely used candle wax for over a century because it's inexpensive and holds fragrance well. However, when burned, paraffin can release trace amounts of chemicals including toluene and benzene, which are known carcinogens. It also tends to produce more soot, which can leave black marks on walls and ceilings over time.

What Is Soy Wax?

Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil — a natural, renewable resource. It was developed in the 1990s as a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to paraffin. Soy wax is biodegradable, burns more cleanly, and is free from the petroleum-derived chemicals found in paraffin.

Key Differences at a Glance

Burn time: Soy wax burns slower and cooler than paraffin, meaning your candle lasts longer — typically 30–50% more burn time for the same amount of wax.

Scent throw: Soy wax has a lower melting point, which means it releases fragrance more gently and consistently. You get a subtler, more natural scent rather than an overwhelming blast.

Soot: Soy candles produce significantly less soot than paraffin candles, keeping your home cleaner and your air fresher.

Sustainability: Soy is a renewable crop, whereas paraffin is a fossil fuel by-product. If environmental impact matters to you, soy is the clear winner.

Clean-up: Spilled soy wax cleans up easily with warm soapy water. Paraffin wax is much harder to remove from surfaces and fabrics.

Are There Any Downsides to Soy Wax?

Soy wax can sometimes develop a frosted appearance on the surface — this is a completely natural characteristic of pure soy wax and doesn't affect the scent or burn quality at all. It's actually a sign that you're burning a genuinely natural product. Soy candles can also be more expensive than paraffin ones, but the longer burn time and cleaner experience more than make up for it.
